Sports Related Concussion (SRC)

SRCs are a type of head injury that people can get while playing sports, especially in sports like football, rugby, hockey, and soccer (Pfister et al., 2016). Children and teenagers get these injuries more often than adults (Pfister et al., 2016). Researchers have been studying SRCs for a long time and have learned a lot about how to diagnose and treat them. Research has also started to look at how these injuries affect people emotionally and socially (Bloom et al., 2004; Kontos et al., 2004). For example, athletes who get these injuries often feel sad, confused, or isolated (Caron, 2019). Researchers have come up with some ideas for how to help athletes with these problems, like support groups and talking to experts in sport psychology (Kontos et al., 2004) and postulate that sport psychology experts can play a bigger role in helping prevent SRCs and helping athletes recover from them. They have also created models to help people understand how psychological factors can affect someone’s recovery from an SRC (Wiese-Bjornstal et al., 2015).
