Resilience training helps individuals, groups, and organizations become stronger and more adaptable in tough situations (Fletcher, 2019). The goal is to help them keep functioning well even when faced with pressure. This is different from coping and counseling, which focus on recovering from the negative effects of challenges, such as feeling unwell or performing poorly. To make resilience training successful, three main areas need to be developed: personal qualities, a supportive environment, and a challenge mindset (Fletcher & Sarkar, 2016). Personal qualities include psychological factors like personality traits and skills that protect individuals from negative consequences, such as burnout or mental health problems (Cox et al., 2016). A supportive environment is a setting that helps build psychological resilience by providing both challenges and support while a challenge mindset means thinking and feeling positively about the pressure one faces, as well as recognizing one’s own strengths and resources (Fletcher, 2019). Examples of this include explaining things in a helpful way (Schinke & Jerome, 2002; Schinke et al., 2004) and having rational beliefs (Turner, 2016). It’s important to develop all three areas well in order to effectively train resilience and maintain well-being and performance over time (Fletcher & Sakar, 2016).
