Projective Testing

Tests that ask a person to interpret marks or symbols, in the hopes that they will reveal their hidden thoughts and feelings. The most famous example is the Rohrshach test, in which people are shown ink blots. Though the ink blots have absolutely no specific shape or details, patients “project” their thoughts and feelings onto them. Responses that are fairly common (“Hey, that looks like a Christmas Tree!) are not very revealing, but those that are unique tell much about the person viewing them.
