Heteronormativity

Heteronormativity describes the belief that being in a heterosexual relationship is seen as normal and expected in society (Werner, 1993). This means that people often assume that a man is with a woman and a woman is with a man. This idea is so common that it is often the default way people think about relationships.

Some researchers who study cultural sport psychology think this assumption is not fair. They believe that different types of relationships should be accepted and respected. These researchers look at how heteronormativity can affect people in different ways, depending on their gender, culture, race, and social class. They also explore how it can cause problems for athletes’ well-being and performance, as well as for relationships between athletes and their coaches or consultants.
