In recent years, the conversation surrounding mental health in sports has primarily focused on athletes, with much less attention paid to the well-being of coaches. However, a growing body of research is beginning to highlight the significant stressors faced by coaches, particularly those in high-performance environments, and the detrimental effects these stressors can have on their mental health. Recent studies, such as those conducted by the French Football Federation (FFF) Research Centre, emphasize the need for more targeted support programs to address the chronic stress, job insecurity, and work-life balance challenges that coaches face. This emerging research sheds light on the critical need for interventions to improve the well-being of coaches, enhancing not only their personal health but also their professional performance

Mental Health and Well-Being of Coaches: An Overlooked Issue

  • Coaches’ mental health has received less attention compared to athletes, despite their critical role and exposure to stressors in high-performance environments.
  • Stressors for coaches include job insecurity, work overload, and balancing personal and professional life. These stressors are often chronic and difficult to manage.

Impact of Stressors on Coaches’ Mental Health and Well-Being

  • Job insecurity and uncontrollable factors (like athletes’ performance) are significant contributors to decreased well-being and increased exhaustion among coaches.
  • Studies show that coaches experience similar levels of mental health disorders as athletes, including anxiety, depression, and high-risk behaviors like alcohol consumption.
  • Organizational stressors, such as workload and lack of control, are particularly challenging and contribute significantly to mental health deterioration.

Limited Interventions and Support for Coaches

  • Few interventional studies focus on improving coaches’ own well-being. Most existing interventions aim indirectly at enhancing athletes’ well-being.
  • A 6-week mindfulness program has shown promise in improving emotional control, anxiety reduction, and promoting well-being in coaches, but these studies are rare.

FFF Research Centre’s Initiatives

  • The French Football Federation (FFF) Research Centre is pioneering research focused on understanding the mechanisms behind the deterioration of coaches’ mental health and well-being.
  • Their approach involves longitudinal studies that track coaches over a competitive season to assess stress, sleep, social support, and other variables.
  • The aim is to develop targeted interventions to promote better mental health and optimize performance for coaches.

Restorative Approaches for Coaches

  • The FFF Research Centre supports coaches through restorative environments, experiences, and interactions, which are designed to help them manage stress and renew their resources.
  • Coaches are encouraged to engage in self-reflection, mindfulness, and other mental health practices to build resilience and improve work-life balance.

Practical Applications for Supporting Coaches

  • The FFF’s programs focus on optimizing personal resources, helping coaches become self-reliant in maintaining their mental health.
  • These programs also aim to reduce the stigma around seeking mental health support by integrating these topics into regular coach education.

More research is needed to fully understand the specific stressors affecting coaches and to develop effective, evidence-based interventions. The FFF’s ongoing research is a step toward addressing the mental health challenges faced by coaches and providing them with practical tools to improve their well-being and professional performance.
